Celebrating World Environment Day 2025: A gentle reminder to live a little slower

Happy World Environment Day!

Well, it’s on June 5th, if we're to get into the specifics. But at Nete.in we try for every day to be World Environment Day, because World Environment Day isn’t just about planting trees or ditching plastic for a day it’s about asking ourselves what kind of world we want to leave behind and how we can start working toward making that vision real, one conscious choice at a time.

Our planet is such a beautiful place. From snow-capped mountains to coral reefs, dense forests to desert dunes, the Earth holds wonders that can still take our breath away. And here in India, we’re lucky to live in one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, with everything from lush Western Ghats and mangrove-rich coastlines to Himalayan forests and desert grasslands. Each of these ecosystems is home to unique wildlife and communities that have coexisted with nature for generations.

World Environment Day is a timely reminder that this incredible planet, and the habitats that make it home, need our care. It's not just about symbolic gestures like planting a tree or avoiding plastic bags for a day. It’s about being more mindful of the impact we leave behind and the choices we make daily. Whether it’s switching to public transport, joining a local clean-up, cutting back on fast fashion, or just consuming more consciously, every small step matters. This is the only home we’ve got. Let’s treat it like one.

To Save The World, There’s A World Of Things To Do

Sometimes, the best way to help the Earth is by doing... less. We don’t need to buy more, do more, or own more constantly. A slower, simpler lifestyle can be surprisingly powerful. Here are a few small (but mighty) ways you can make a difference:

  • Buy Less, Choose Better:
Ask yourself how many times you’ll wear your next purchase, and how well you can care for it. Thoughtful consumption adds value to both you and your wardrobe. At Nete, we curate and support brands that make shopping kinder for the planet. Some of our eco-conscious favorites include Doodlage, Alternative, With N, and UN-Denim. Whether they’re working with factory waste and post-consumer garments or designing for longevity and slow living, these collections are rooted in natural fabrics and timeless silhouettes and crafted ethically in small batches. Proof that mindful fashion doesn’t mean compromising on style or comfort.

  • Fix Instead of Tossing:
That loose button? Stitch it. The old stool with a wobbly leg? Tighten it. The cracked pot? Try the Japanese art of Kintsugi, repairing with gold to celebrate flaws. Repairing is radical.

  • Wrap With Heart, Not Waste:
Use old newspapers, scarves, calendars, or fabric scraps to wrap gifts. It’s charming, creative, and saves a tree (or ten).

  • Let Your Tech Take a Nap:
Turn off your devices overnight. Unplug chargers when not in use. It reduces phantom energy drain and gives your gadgets (and mind) a break.

  • Rethink Clean:
Switch to refillable cleaners, soap bars, or DIY kitchen solutions like vinegar + baking soda. Bonus: fewer harsh chemicals, more shelf space.

  • Give Your Fridge Some Love:
Use what you already have before buying more. Organize your fridge so older food stays in sight. Reducing food waste is one of the simplest climate actions.

  • Celebrate Differently:
Host a potluck instead of ordering in. Skip balloons and opt for handmade decor. Borrow instead of buying party supplies. Memories last longer than decorations.

  • Go Offline:
Spending more time outdoors (and less time scrolling) is good for you and the planet. No batteries needed to watch a sunset or listen to birdsong.

Activities Across India to Mark World Environment Day 2025

From cities to coastlines, individuals, communities, and organizations across India are coming together to protect the planet we call home. Whether you're looking to roll up your sleeves or simply stand in solidarity, there's something for everyone this World Environment Day.

  1. Mumbai: ReCircle’s Dry Waste Collection Drive & Beach Clean-Up with "Change Is Us"
This month, Mumbaikars can take real steps toward a cleaner city by joining ReCircle’s special World Environment Day Dry Waste Collection Drive. ReCircle, a clean-tech startup committed to circular economy solutions, offers free doorstep pickup of dry waste - including plastic, paper, cardboard, e-waste, and glass. Collected waste is processed at their Dahisar Material Recovery Facility, where it’s sorted and recycled by Safai Saathis - the informal workers who are key to this ecosystem. It’s a simple way to reduce your environmental footprint while supporting dignified livelihoods. Schedule your pickup here. Prefer to be outdoors? On June 8, join a beach clean-up drive led by the community initiative Change Is Us. It’s a hands-on way to tackle ocean-bound plastic and reconnect with nature. Gloves and good vibes provided.

  3. Nationwide: Cloth Swap Parties
Cities like Bengaluru, Pune, and Chennai are buzzing with clothes swap events hosted by eco-conscious brands and community groups. Bring gently used clothes you no longer wear and exchange them for someone else’s pre-loved finds. It’s circular fashion at its best - zero cost, zero waste, all style. Can’t find one near you? Host your own. It’s easier than you think.

  4. All-India: ‘One Nation, One Mission’ Campaign
Led by the Ministry of Environment, this nationwide initiative includes:
    - Awareness drives in urban and rural communities
    - School and college workshops on sustainability
    - Mega plastic clean-up events
    - Local, community-powered green projects

World Environment Day isn’t about one grand gesture. It’s about many small, conscious choices that add up. Whether you rewear what you already own, choose to walk or cycle, refuse that single-use fork, or show up for a clean-up drive, it all matters. At Nete.in, we believe conscious living is a mindset, not a moment. This June 5th, let’s use World Environment Day as a gentle reminder to live a little slower, tread a little lighter, and love our planet a whole lot more. Because to save the world, there’s a world of things we can do. And most of them start right where you are.
